Lawler cleared 1.8 meters in the high jump to take first, while Stoeger won the 1,600 meters in 4:33.97.

St. Bede’s Zach Roebuck (41.87 in the 300 hurdles) and Hall’s Caleb Savitch (3.25 meters in the pole vault) scored second-place finishes to also earn state bids.

At Erie

Amboy co-op’s Brock Loftus placed fourth in the 3,200 meters at the Class 1A Erie-Prophetstown Sectional, but the junior ran a 10:11.63 to beat the state-qualifying standard to earn a trip to Charleston.

WRESTLING

At La Salle

Connor Lorden recorded two pins Friday as La Salle-Peru ended the regular season by placing fifth in the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament.

The Cavaliers beat Morris 41-36 in the consolation semifinals, as freshman Gunnar Wright won by pin at 285 pounds to seal the match.

In the fifth-place match, the Cavs edged Ottawa 36-35.

Sylvester St. Peter, Zach Znaniecki, Austin Christmann and Wright each won twice on the day.

“Ending the year with two wins at home sure is a nice feeling for the team,” L-P coach Matt Rebholz said. “We have a young team that is continually learning and developing. I am looking forward to building on this team’s success.”

BOYS TENNIS

At Chicago suburbs

The Mendota doubles team of Logan Brandner and Andrew Stamberger went 2-2 at the IHSA Class 1A state meet on Thursday. It is only the second time in program history that a singles player or doubles team has won two matches at state.

The Trojan duo lost its opening match 6-1, 6-0 to Chicago Latin’s Sam Cutinho and Antonio Feliciano before bouncing back to beat Mattoon’s Josh Ramage and Pierce Famer in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Brandner and Stamberger then won by forfeit in their second-round consolation match before their season came to an end with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Elgin Academy’s Johnny Yarvari and Joseph Hargrave.

The La Salle-Peru duo of Andrew Bollis and Gavin Jonassen also saw its season end Thursday with a pair of losses.

The Cavalier pair lost 6-2, 6-1 to Morton’s Kyle Braker and Connor Loudermilk in the opening round, then fell to Prairie Ridge’s Nathan Kim and Samuel Kim in a first-round consolation match.
